Automatic WordPress plugin updates that roll back when something breaks

The problem

Rolling back the files isn’t enough.

Many updates, especially for e-commerce and page builders, change the database too. The classic rollback that restores only the plugin folder leaves the site half-way: new tables, old code.

And updating every site at the same moment means discovering a faulty release on all your clients at once.

How it works

Backup, checks, update, verification.

    Before

    A recent full backup, a check of the pages you choose and a restore point with the plugin folder and the tables it may change.

    During

    The plugin is updated with WordPress’s own updater, at night in the site’s timezone.

  3. 3

    After

    We check the pages and PHP errors again. If something broke, files and database go back to how they were, and the pages are checked once more.

  • Levels per site: manual, security updates only, full
  • A 48-hour delay for releases that don’t fix a vulnerability
  • Rolled out in waves: a small share of sites first, then all. A release that breaks sites is stopped
  • HTTP status, text, styles and error messages checked on the home page and chosen pages
  • Tables touched by the update listed in the report
  • Manual rollback available for three days
  • Plugins with expired licences flagged instead of failing silently

What happens if an update breaks the site?

The restore point is applied: the plugin folder and saved tables come back, tables created by the update are removed and the pages are checked again. You get an alert with the reason.

Does it work for Joomla?

Today for WordPress plugins and themes. Joomla extensions come next.

Can I choose what updates automatically?

Yes: for each site choose manual updates, only releases that fix vulnerabilities, or everything after the delay.
